Faculty Technology Days 2009: Teaching and Learning with Technology
For Faculty and Graduate Students

Libraries and Cultural Resources, the Teaching and Learning Centre and Information Technologies are pleased to present the annual Faculty Technology Days: Teaching and Learning with Technology, May 5-7, 2009. This 3 day event is open to all faculty and graduate students. There is no charge to attend Faculty Technology Days.

Tom Hickerson, Vice-Provost (Libraries and Cultural Resources and University Librarian), will kick-off FTD with a session on Convergence of Knowledge and Culture: our Design for the Future: the Taylor Family Digital Library. Tom will discuss how the Taylor Family Digital Library (scheduled to open in fall 2010) will bring together libraries, archives, museums, and the university press for the benefit of scholars. It will be a 21st century research facility in the heart of campus which will house a "collection of the future" integrating access to traditional print, museum, and archival materials. Come hear about the strategic plans and learn how the Taylor Library will embody a new campus prototype for learning, teaching and conducting research. There will be time for questions.

New Database: Slavery Abolition and Social Justice 1490-2007

Slavery and Abolition and Social Justice 1490-2007 is designed as portal for slavery and abolition studies, bringing together documents and collections covering 1490-2007, from libraries and archives across the Atlantic world. Close attention is being given to the varieties of slavery, the legacy of slavery, the social justice perspective and the continued existence of slavery today.

Topic coverage includes the African Coast; the Middle Passage; the varieties of slave experience (urban, domestic, industrial, farm, ranch and plantation); Spiritualism and Religion; Resistance and Revolts; the Underground Railroad; the Abolition Movement; Legislation; Education; the Legacy of Slavery and Slavery Today.

The project aims to assemble many substantial clusters of material offering in-depth case studies in America, the Caribbean, Brazil and Cuba along with important material examining European, Islamic and African involvement in the slave trade.

World Trials Library
In addition to trial transcripts and other critical court documents, this collection includes trial-related resources such as monographs which analyze and debate the decisions of famous trials as well as biographies of many great trial lawyers in history.

Foreign & International Law Resources
Part 1 will include International Yearbooks and Serials, Part 2 contains U.S. Law Digests, Part 3 consists of International Tribunals and Judicial Decisions and Part 4 includes other significant works relating to foreign and international law.

Check out the UofC library new books list currently in beta. You can select by branch (like MacKimmie), by material type (like reference) and by broad call # range (like FC, GV, HM, PN). Since it is the end of the budget year, not a lot of books have been purchased over the last couple of weeks -so select past four weeks under "select items catalogued in the:" section. Ordering will pick up again in April. And a reminder to send me book suggestions - you don't need to wait until April.

Finding Multimedia News

Truveo video search lets you search and find videos from across the Web. Use Truveo to find all types of online video including hit television shows, full-length movies, breaking news clips, sports highlights, music videos, or the latest viral videos.

Blinx has an index of over 18 million hours of searchable video and more than 200 media partnerships, including national broadcasters, commercial media giants, and private video libraries.

Using Factiva to Find News Photos

Factiva, the UofCs primary news database also contains news photos. Newswire photos from Reuters, McClatchy (formerly Knight-Ridder) and a handful of international newswires from Australia, Italy, and Switzerland. There are also photos from Fashion Wire Daily.

Here's how to search and find news photos in Factiva:

From the main Factiva page, click on the Search tab at the upper left.
Click on the Source button (in gray, next to the plus sign, in the center of the screen).
From the Source Category drop-down menu, select Pictures.
Click on the sources you want to search to select them.
Enter your search.

Martin's Online Criminal Code

Martin's Online Criminal Code is an online legal research tool that provides users with access to the Criminal Code at a particular point in time, along with the corresponding commentary. Users can browse through previous versions of Martin's Annual Criminal Code, or search for a particular section or subsection at a specific date.

It includes full-text of the following:

all versions of the Criminal Code dating back to 1955,
cross-references, synopses, and annotations from Martin's Annual Criminal Code dating back to 1955,

Retain Rights to Journal Articles

CARL AND SPARC OFFER CANADIAN AUTHORS NEW TOOL TO WIDEN ACCESS TO PUBLISHED ARTICLES

The Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) and SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) announced the release of the SPARC Canadian Author Addendum, a new tool for authors in Canada to retain key rights to the journal articles they publish.

Traditional publishing agreements often require that authors grant exclusive rights to the publisher. The new SPARC Canadian Author Addendum enables authors to secure a more balanced agreement by retaining select rights, such as the rights to reproduce, reuse, and publicly present the articles they publish for non-commercial purposes.

American Film Scripts Online

Many of the scripts currently in American Film Scripts Online can now be found through the catalogue. Search for one of 568 scripts and you'll be linked to the database. For example, search for "Ararat and script" and follow the link.

American Film Scripts Online (AFSO) contains 776 scripts by 856 writers together with detailed, fielded information on the scenes, characters and people related to the scripts. In addition, the database includes over 430 original images of previously unpublished screenplays.

Searchable tables, graphs and more in CSA Illustrata

CSA Illustrata: Natural Sciences is a database of searchable tables, figures, graphs, charts and other illustrations from the scholarly research and technical literature.

Each table, etc. is indexed separately with key terms, caption and category. You can do a search just for tables or graphs or charts, etc. Test it out and see what turns up. Try a search for the article Consumer perceptions of food-related risks and you will see the associated tables - mouse-over and you will see details about each tumbnail image. If you search for "perceived risk to food", a thumbnail image that contains those words will be highlighted. Illustrata is an excellent way to find hard to find information buried within an article as well as finding graphics to use for classes.

CSA Illustrata: Natural Sciences is interdisciplinary, covering a wide variety of journals from all major areas such as: biology, earth sciences, environmental studies, medical sciences, agriculture, fish and fisheries, education, geography, veterinary science, food and food industries, pharmacy and pharmacology, meteorology, public health and safety, water resources, conservation and forests and forestry.

CSA is planning to have Illustrata added to most of their information products so we should progress over the next couple of years. I think that this tool has excellent potential - try it out and let me know what you think. I can also set-up one-on-one sessions or small groups if there are enough interested individuals.

Film and Television Index

This is a new index on the EBSCO platform. Open any EBSCO database, such as Academic Search Premier or Communication and Mass Media Complete, and select Film and Television Index from the list. This will be added to the Research Databases list soon.

A comprehensive index covering the entire spectrum of television and film writing and produced for a broad target audience, from film scholars to general viewers. Subject coverage includes: film & television theory, preservation & restoration, writing, production, cinematography, technical aspects, and reviews.

New Journal: International Journal of Communication

An institutional repository (IR) is a digital collection of a university's intellectual output. Institutional repositories centralize, preserve, and make accessible the knowledge generated by academic institutions. They also form part of a larger global system of repositories, which are indexed in a standardized way and searchable using one interface, providing the foundation for a new model of scholarly publishing.

Goal of the Institutional Repository at the University of Calgary
Libraries and Cultural Resources and Information Technologies support research and teaching at the University and, in particular, preserve and make publicly available the University's record of scholarly information by populating it's Institutional Repository. Our repository will foster open access to the research output of the University and research across Southern Alberta. The repository, using a software package called DSpace, will provide for a variety of document types and file formats. The project team will provide the platform, advise on workflow and metadata requirements, and ensure long-term preservation and access to the materials.

Taylor Family Digital Library

Here is the official announcement of the Taylor Family Digital Library (formerly known as the Calgary Campus Digital Library) from December 8, 2006.

"The new Taylor Family Digital Library (TFDL) will begin construction in the fall of this year and it promises to be one of the most visionary concepts anywhere in the world. Building on the great success of the current Information Commons, the TFDL will be an energetic and welcoming facility where students, faculty, staff and members of the community can unite with information and each other – a physical and digital gathering place that supports in many ways the pursuit for understanding, creativity, innovation and knowledge.

The Taylor Family Digital Library embodies the library of the future where technology and information in all forms converge to better serve the information and learning needs of students, researchers, and members of the community. Colbert weighs in on Wikipedia

In the ongoing debate on the value (or lack thereof) of Wikipedia, chances are students aren't going to be overly swayed by what a librarian thinks of it. But they may listen to Stephen Colbert. Personally, I think this should be required viewing for students who are used to relying on free web information and popular media for their assignments (and it's quite fun for the rest of us too).

Doug Brent article highlighted on international library list-serv

The ILI-L listserv is extremely popular in the library field with thousands of subscribers worldwide, mostly from academic libraries. So, it was a pleasant surprize when the following post appeared last week. Barbara Fister (the poster) writes prolifically about information literacy and is very well-respected in the field, so I'm sure Doug will earn a large following of librarian fans as a result of this recommendation for his paper.

I just bumped into a very interesting article, well worth a read - Doug Brent. "Using an Academic Content Seminar to Engage Students with the Culture of Academic Research." Journal of the First Year Experience and Students in Transition 18(1) 2006: 23-54. There's a draft copy on Doug's homepage - the first link under "Papers on Rhetoric and Composition Studies." (He's seriously into self-archiving!) http://www.acs.ucalgary.ca/%7Edabrent/mystuff.html

He interviewed students about their reseaarch experience in a first term seminar context and their perspective is very interesting, both in terms of the differences they perceive between high school and university research expectations and what sort of experience engages them most when doing research. There's also a discussion of different types of first year seminars that is valuable - I hadn't realized the extent to which the purposes and nature of these courses varies by design.

Might be worth sharing with your first year seminar director, if you have such a thing on your campus.

Another slow week in Library News, so once again I'm going to point to interesting stuff I've found elsewhere. This time it's a post on the Tomorrow's Professor blog (a great resource if you haven't seen it before - lots of thought-provoking posts on all aspects of teaching and learning in Higher Ed). This one is by Michael L. Rodgers and David A. Starrett, Southeast Missouri State University, and talks about the challenges and opportunities of academic libraries in the 21st Century and how instructors can encourage students to get the most out of them.

Google Jockeys - why you need one (or don't) in your class

It's been sort of a slow couple weeks for library news, so I thought I'd bring up something a bit different. Some of you are likely aware of Educause's "7 Things Your Should Know" series, covering all aspects of technology in education. Usually I'm at least aware of the concept they cover in these, but Google Jockeying was new to me! A Google Jockey is a student in class who is assigned by the professor to surf the web for info on terms, ideas, Websites, etc. being covered in the lecture. A screen displays everything the jockey turns up for all participants to see. I'm not sure how I feel about this. Does it just reinforce students' ideas that everything can be found using Google? Does it cause them to be more critical of wha they find? Would it really add to the class or just be major distraction? What do you think?

I am sure I am not the only person in our faculty who didn't know about this treasure and would not have found out about it for years if I had not been lucky. I only found out about it yesterday when a colleague sent me a direct link to a specific book in this database. Our helpful librarians may have informed us on their blog, but I seldom go there unless I see an email about it and have some time, and even then I skim it very fast (sorry, Chris and Shauna, but it's true).

At present, **our U of C Library Catalogue will not tell you if we have online access to a book in this database.** Many of its books don't show up there.

I have discovered many Oxford UP books in this database that may have chapters useful to my research."

North American Indian biographical database
The North American Indian Biographical Database contains more than 100,000 pages of personal stories, many of which are previously unpublished, rare, or hard to find. The collection presents the entire spectrum of Indian and Canadian First People experiences from their own point of view. Firsthand accounts reveal how Indians lived, thought, and fought to protect their interests; how the tribes interacted with each other and the white invaders; and how they reacted to the constantly changing and challenging situations they faced. These rare and informative biographies are supported with historical materials that provide context for the personal stories. Oral history online

Asian American drama
With 250 plays, this is a landmark collection in a rapidly developing genre. It documents the Asian American experience as dramatized in works by writers from the 18th century to the present, together with biographies, a performance database, production details, and associated visual resources, including photos, playbills, and manuscript images.

North American women's drama

North American Theatre Online will be the largest, most comprehensive reference work in North American drama. Wikipedia again

There seems to be no shortage of news and opinion pieces on Wikipedia these days. Here's another. What makes this one different is that the author isn't picking sides; she says both Wikipedia and conventional encyclopedias like Britannica have a role in research, and that those goals aren't the same. Here's her conclusion:

"Let’s act like careful, reasonable people. Wikipedia is a great starting point. It’s a lesson in research methodology, a fun way to share expertise, and a groundbreaking new way of working. Its consensus model represents a shift in management styles and away from hierarchical organization. You might say that Wikipedia is Zen-like. Its ever-changing nature means that when you read it, you are completely in the moment. And its collective brain is like a conscious universe in which we are all one.

Britannica is a different animal. Flawed, yes. Behind the times with regard to non-Western and minority leadership, sure. Indispensable? You betcha. "

The Index to Foreign Legal Periodicals, produced by The American
Association of Law Libraries, provides access to legal literature
worldwide, covering all forms of foreign (non-Anglo-American) law. This

commercial law. The data is not limited by country of publication, but

Wikipedia changing its policies on anonymous entries

I'm sure many profs and TA's have been seeing wikipedia articles popping up in student reference lists for the past year or so. For those who haven't seen it, Wikidpedia (http://www.wikipedia.org/) is a free online encyclopedia that is created and edited by anyone who wants to create or edit an entry. The idea is that the user community will police itself, and any erroneous entries will be corrected quickly by users who catch the problems and/or mistakes. Wikipedia has become incredibly popular with students but has been met with great cynicism by librarians and scholars who still like to think there's such a thing as authority.

Some recent publicity about problematic entries has caused Wikipedia creator Jimmy Wales to come to the defence of his product, but he's also changing some of the ground rules for contributing to it. The NY Times tells you more...

EBSCOhost is introducing several product enhancements in the beginning of 2006 to their databases (Academic Search Premier, Communication and Mass Media Complete, etc.).

* Visual Search delivers a graphically-rich, extremely efficient visual searching alternative, available in addition to EBSCO's popular Basic and Advanced Searching modes.

* EBSCOhost Clustering displays links of search results sorted by subject, in addition to regular Result List article links. The links provide users with instant access to just those articles concerning particular subjects.

* Database Selection from the Basic and Advanced Search Screens is available using a drop-down list of the databases in the profile being searched, eliminating the need to return to the Choose Databases screen to select a different database.

As you are all aware, the Library launched its new website in September of this year. We are now doing some usability testing to measure whether or not we go it right. We are looking for undergraduates, grad students and faculty to participate. Testing will take approximately 1 hour and sessions will be run during the week of November 28-December 2. The University Library will be conducting a usability study of the Library website, and is looking for volunteers to participate in this study.

How long with the study take?
The study will take one hour of your time.

What will be expected of me if I participate in this study?
You’ll be asked several questions about your use of, and opinions of the current Library website. You’ll also be asked several questions that require you to search the University Library website for specific kinds of information. While you search, you’ll be asked to “think aloud”, verbalizing your thought processes.

Note that this is a study of the usability of the Library website, not a test of your knowledge or skill level.

Where and when does the study take place?
The study will be held in the MacKimmie Library Link, Room 102, from November 28th to December 2nd 2005.

This modular tutorial is designed to assist students through the entire process of finding information, from topic selection all the way through to shutting down their search. We have incorporated multimedia features, tools, and activities to keep users engaged as they progress through the six phases. A generic version of the tutorial is available on the library website at http://library.ucalgary.ca/wispr

Librarians can also customize the tutorial to be used in a specific course or discipline. The exercises, examples, and particular tools can be selected to suit an assignment or subject area. Increased journal coverage through Science Direct

The U of C library has increased coverage of a number of journals in the social sciences and sciences. Access to these journals is available through the library catalogue. Some of the added journals include:

Here is a new database where you may find resources related to your research and course areas.

SocINDEX with Full Text, is a comprehensive sociology research database. The index features more than 1,300,000 records with subject headings. Searchable cited references are also provided. SocINDEX with Full Text offers coverage from all subdisciplines of sociology, including abortion, anthropology, criminology, criminal justice, cultural sociology, demography, economic development, ethnic & racial studies, gender studies, marriage & family, politics, religion, rural sociology, social psychology, social structure, social work, sociological theory, sociology of education, substance abuse, urban studies, violence, welfare, and many others.

Ebrary - Access to Electronic Books

The U of C community now has access to 20,000 electronic books through ebrary. Each of the books will appear in the catalogue but for now, I'll provide a direct link. You can search and read books in the ebrary collection without being registered but you will not have access to the enhanced features so I encourage you to register. If you have not access ebrary previously, you will be prompted to donwload the ebrary reader.

Features:

Personal Bookshelf - allows you to keep track of the books that are of most interest to you.
Searching - search the text within a book.
Bookmarks - remembers the important parts of the book.
Highlighting - highlight key words or phrases.
Notes - add comments and thoughts to parts of the book.

15 October 2005 for Allectra - Electronic Reserves and (Books already in our collection)

31 October 2005 (or two weeks before required during the term) for Library Material

15 December 2005 (or 7 working days before needed during the term) for Personal Copies

Hi Everyone. I am the new Liaison Librarian for Communications Studies. So what does that mean? Well, I am one of your contact points with the library. I am responsible for guiding the purchase of communications-related books and journals for the library and to make sure that there are sufficient materials to cover your research needs as well as materials to support the students in their course studies. I also provide research consulation and assistance with finding and using any of the library's electronic tools or online resources. In addition, I can arrange and conduct library instruction sessions for students and faculty.
