New Book Lists at UofC

Check out the UofC library new books list currently in beta. You can select by branch (like MacKimmie), by material type (like reference) and by broad call # range (like FC, GV, HM, PN). Since it is the end of the budget year, not a lot of books have been purchased over the last couple of weeks -so select past four weeks under "select items catalogued in the:" section. Ordering will pick up again in April. And a reminder to send me book suggestions - you don't need to wait until April.

Let me know if you have any comments or questions.

Finding Multimedia News

Everyzing, searches a wide variety of other sources, including audio and video from NBC's Meet the Press, ABC and CBS News podcasts, NPR, Slate, as well as several local newscasts, sports radio, and selected YouTube videos.

Truveo video search lets you search and find videos from across the Web. Use Truveo to find all types of online video including hit television shows, full-length movies, breaking news clips, sports highlights, music videos, or the latest viral videos.

Blinx has an index of over 18 million hours of searchable video and more than 200 media partnerships, including national broadcasters, commercial media giants, and private video libraries.

Using Factiva to Find News Photos

Factiva, the UofCs primary news database also contains news photos. Newswire photos from Reuters, McClatchy (formerly Knight-Ridder) and a handful of international newswires from Australia, Italy, and Switzerland. There are also photos from Fashion Wire Daily.

Here's how to search and find news photos in Factiva:
  1. From the main Factiva page, click on the Search tab at the upper left.
  2. Click on the Source button (in gray, next to the plus sign, in the center of the screen).
  3. From the Source Category drop-down menu, select Pictures.
  4. Click on the sources you want to search to select them.
  5. Enter your search.
Thanks to my colleague Ken Liss at Boston College for pointing these out.

New Database: Theatre in Video

Theatre in Video contains more than 250 definitive performances of the world's leading plays, together with more than 100 film documentaries, online in streaming video - more than 500 hours in all. This release contains 279 titles, representing hundreds of leading playwrights, actors and directors. With live television broadcasts of New York productions from the 50s, revivals of classic works and experimental performances from the 60s and 70s, as well as important contemporary performances, Theatre in Video covers a wide range of 20th century theatre history. Unlike Hollywood adaptations, these are the actual original productions, captured and recorded while performed for a live theatre audience.
